Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney takes a huge step tonight: The undefeated 25-year-old is moving up a weight class, taking on Regis Prograis for the WBC super lightweight belt.

The American completed the set at lightweight, beating George Kambosos Jr twice in Australia to become the undisputed 135lbs champion, and he defended that crown with a somewhat fortunate points victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko in May.

Haney last week declared that he will be vacating his lightweight belts, turning his full focus to the 140lbs super-lightweight division and suggesting he could even move up further in the future in his bid to become a three-weight world champion.

The 25-year-old, 30-0 as a professional, faces a major test in his first fight at super-lightweight though, as he bids to take Prograis' WBC belt. Josh Taylor is the only man to have beaten Prograis, who became world champion for a second time when he stopped Jose Zepeda last year.

Prograis was though far from convincing when beating Danielito Zorrilla on points in his homecoming bout in New Orleans six months ago, and now it is Haney who has home advantage in San Francisco on Saturday night.

He may not be the most thrilling fighter to watch but Haney is clinically effective and, while fans are desperate to see bouts against Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis, the 25-year-old has showed no fear in taking on Lomachenko and Kambosos Jr, who he travelled to Australia to beat twice.

Should it be another successful night for Haney, the formula will surely be a familiar one. His last seven wins have come on points and the American can be expected to try and keep himself out of trouble throughout, controlling the distance and picking off rounds with his jab.

Prograis has the power to trouble Haney, with 24 of his 29 professional wins coming by stoppage, and he will have to force the issue and be the aggressor on Saturday night. His performance last time out against Zorrilla will have done nothing to worry Haney - a major step-up is required from the champion.

Haney has a seemingly unshakeable confidence, is almost ten years younger than Prograis, and can be expected to look even stronger in the ring now he is not having to make 135lbs. In a clash of styles, the control of Haney is likely to come out on top.

Regis Prograis is also coming off a bout that was not among his best performances. Danielito Zorrilla was able to take him to a split-decision in a fight that can only be deemed tedious, and that’s being kind. Regis, who has only tasted defeat once, hopes to take Haney’s 0 away.

Both men present big challenges to each other but Prograis’ power is certainly his bread and butter but if we look at his fight with Zorrilla, we see that he had troubles cutting off the ring. Haney’s a lot better than Zorrilla and with dazzling footwork. It’s certainly a fight that could be a certified banger, but many believe it will be more of a technical chess match.

This is one of the most bold moves in Haney's career to this point. Coming off a unanimous decision win over Vasiliy Lomachenko in May, he'll look to conquer a new weight class and retain his unbeaten record (30-0, 15 KOs).

On the other side of the ring, Prograis will look to hold on to his super lightweight title. He is coming off a successful defense of the belt against Danielito Zorrilla by split decision and faces an uphill battle to hold onto the strap.

Devin Haney prevailed in his last fight against Vasiliy Lomachenko, but it was closer than expected. With the 35-year-old Lomachenko moving up to 135 pounds and slowing down in the twilight of his career, Haney was a sizable favorite.

But the fight was much closer than it was supposed to be on paper. Lomachenko put the pressure on Haney, was able to work inside and landed power shots throughout the fight.

Ultimately, Haney was able to do enough to get the nod from all three judges, but Lomachenko might have laid out a plan for future opponents. His smart pressure and aggression threw Haney off his game and forced him to work for the win.

This high-profile bout is being promoted by Matchroom Boxing, and it will take place at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California. Haney is looking to become a two-weight world champion while Prograis will attempt to successfully defend his WBC world title belt for a second time.

Since the announcement of this championship bout, the promotion has been consistently good, and the trash-talking between the two fighters has been consistently heated. It’s safe to say Prograis and Haney do not like each other. Both boxers are ready to settle their differences inside of the squared circle.

A product of New Orleans, Louisiana, Regis Prograis became a world champion back in April 2019 when he defeated Kiryl Relikh by way of sixth round TKO. Six months later, Prograis made an attempt to become a unified champion, but unfortunately, he lost to Josh Taylor via a majority decision.

For Regis Prograis, the next couple of years would be filled with anger and frustration as a second opportunity to fight for a world title eluded him. He finally received another shot at a title back in November 2022 when he defeated Jose Zepeda and won the vacant WBC strap.

One of the keys to victory for Regis Prograis is to cleverly find a way to close the distance. Normally Prograis closes the distance by just pressing forward, but for this particular bout, it may be wise for him to utilize the jab while attempting to close distance against Haney.

Prograis has a twitching type of style in which he’s constantly moving his head from side to side. Prograis is a power puncher who is also a good counterpuncher, and he has the ability to land shots from unpredictable angles. Devin Haney wins this match by controlling range and keeping it a boxing match, but Regis Prograis can retain his title by closing the distance and turning this bout from a boxing match into a fight.
